Character of the Week : Shigure Sohma

"Character of the Month" will now be "Character of the Week" due to my abundance of free time :) I hope you enjoy!

This week I chose Shigure Sohma!
While flirtatious and goofy this man is one of the many loved Characters in the manga/anime series Fruits Basket! *There will be a separate post about this wonderful series! *

" Shigure is an author, who is raising Yuki and Kyo, Shigure hides his true self under a pretense of constant silliness. He's kid to Tohru, and generally friendly, but sometimes his eyes are cold. He seems to know something about the Zodiac curse, but he dodges qusetions about it, It's not entirely clear whether he has Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, or anyone else's best interest at heart, but he's obviously plotting something that involves Tohru. A couple of years ago he dated Mayuko Shiraki, Tohru;s homeroom teacher, who called him a "ripple in the water". " ~ Natsuki Takaya (Author)

Shigure was an easy choice for character of the month because of his fun loving and spontaneous nature. His personality highly resembles that of his zodiac animal, the dog. However, I would not consider him my favorite character from the series because of his conniving side, yet he is still so easy to love! In the manga you see more of his dark side than the anime reveals to its audience.

His Fashion Concept

"He latched onto the idea that novelists should wear kimonos, so he started wearing them--sloppily-- to get into the spirit of things. Before he became a writer (when he still lived at the main house), he wore rougher cloths like t-shirts and jeans because it suited his idea of that life. 'Sort of getting into the spirit of things' is really just another of his games, as if he's proving that hes not committed to anything " ~Natsuki Takaya

"Shigure's Weakness: Since he grew up with Hatori and Ayame, the other Zodiac members his age, Shigure is close enough to them to sometimes show his true self. When he does, Hatori usually lectures him for being annoying-- so he gets nervous on the rare occasions when Hatori doesn't rebuke him.
Adult Advice: Shigure always seems to be messing around, but sometimes he gives serious advice as the adult of the house. He compares spending time with people to martial arts practice, and advises Kyo, who's awkward around people, to "not run away. Keep training". Shigure usually offers advice in metaphors, which isn't surprising coming from a novelist.
A Man like a Jellyfish: Shigure hides himself so well under his frivolous comments that he's impossible to grasp. Hatori says he's a "jellyfish".

A Cool-Headed Schemer: Behind Shigure's sociable facade lies a shewed stategist. he'll use anyone to get what he wants: Tohru, Yuki, Kyo... even Akito. He doesn't cooperate with or rely on anyone, and noting seems to stir his heart"

SOME Good Anime Quotes: ( there are many more)
"Fruits Basket: A Rice Ball in a Fruits Basket (#1.5)" (2001)
Shigure Sohma: [summing up Kyo's recent outburst] We've just witnessed a classic example of what I like to call Misdirected Rage. I believe the technical term is Being an Ass.
Kyo Sôma: You are SO FULL OF IT!

"Fruits Basket: White Day (#1.12)" (2001)
Shigure Sohma: [hanging up a maid's uniform] Well, here it is, my White Day present for Tohru. Lovely, isn't it? The poor girl's gone far too long without suitable clothing to wear while cleaning the house.
Hatsuharu Sohma: It's amazing no one's locked you up yet.

"Fruits Basket: The Adult's Episode: Yuki's a Messed-Up Snake! (#1.14)" (2001)
[Kyo woke up to find Ayame sleeping in his bed]
Ayame Sohma: I'm sorry, but I had no other choice. Yuki locked the door to his bedroom, so I couldn't sleep in there.
Kyo Sohma: Why the Hell didn't you go to Shigure's room like yesterday?

Ayame Sohma: Because, if I had, Shigure would have kept me up all night.
Shigure Sohma: [smiling] Hey, uh, not in front of the children, please.
Kyo Sohma: Oh, cut it out!
Yuki Sohma: [to himself] Just ignore them. IGNORE them!
Kyo Sohma: How much longer you stayin' here, anyway?
Ayame Sohma: Don't worry, if it bothers you THAT much, tonight I'll sleep in Tohru's room.
Yuki & Kyo: [together] You will NOT!
